Special Monthly Compensation

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

SMC is additional, higher-rate compensation for veterans with especially serious service-connected disabilities. It's one of the most frequently overlooked benefits.

The main SMC levels

LevelGenerally for…
SMC-KLoss or loss of use of a creative organ, a hand, a foot, both buttocks, or blindness in one eye, plus certain other losses. Paid in addition to your regular rating.
SMC-S (housebound)One condition rated 100% plus additional conditions independently rated 60% or more, or being permanently housebound by service-connected disabilities
SMC-LNeeding the regular aid and attendance of another person, being bedridden, or certain combinations of loss of use or blindness
SMC-M through O, R-1, R-2Progressively more severe combinations of disabilities and higher levels of care

VA publishes SMC rates each year on its SMC rates page. The rules for combining levels are complex (38 CFR § 3.350).

Why it gets missed

VA is supposed to consider SMC whenever the evidence raises it, but it's often overlooked. This is especially true of SMC-S for veterans rated 100% for one condition with other significant ratings, and of SMC-K for erectile dysfunction from medications or for loss of use.

Rated at or near 100%?

We'll check whether any SMC levels apply to you.
